I agree. I am preparing myself for this (buying some of the citronella spray, etc.)- protecting my dog when we are out and about. I live in a somewhat urban area but am fortunate to live close to a plethora of trails, etc. where I can take my dog to excercise, play, etc. Unfortunately, as we all seemed to have learned, you just never know what dog, cat, wild animal, person (including clueless dog owners) you might come across.
Thanks, for the encouragement.

Personally, I would not rely on citronella spray. I know that it would have zero effect on my dog. Pepper spray is more effective and I have encountered some dogs that required a heavy dose of it.

I've not used the spray shield yet so i can't attest to the power of it as a deterrent. however i know pepper spray if it blows back (because of wind) on you or your dog can be fairly harmful and in the worst cases will require medical attention.
If you don't mind feeling like batman with a lot of things attached to your belt i would carry both and then you can up the ante if your not taken seriously.
The Citronella is to stop animals from approaching. it probably won't work if the animal is openly aggressive or otherwise extremely determined. I'm getting it because most people can't control their dogs and when the are off leash and start wondering over, I can humanely deter them. However if i thought they had intent to hurt myself or my dog i would not think twice about using the pepper spray... or a big stick.
