I found my first deer ticks on my dogs yesterday after a run near an ocean marsh. They both got Lyme disease last summer despite expensive topical pesticides. I used Advantix, and ordered the preventix collar but had to send the collar back because they like to play by chewing on each other's necks and the collar is toxic. So I've been looking into natural remedies. I've found 'bug off garlic', and also something called Cedarcide. Both get rave 'reviews' by people on the sites, but I'd like to know if they actually work before I order them. I'd get the garlic now so it could be in my dogs' systems before tick season ramps up again. As much tick picking as I do (and I was picking up to 30 off each dog after every run in April), a few still escape me, and the Advantix and Frontline only kill about 80% in my experience. I hope to be moving north and out of tick area soon but the little buggers start coming out in mid-March. Any suggestions?
I have used "Best Yet" from Cedarcide for almost a year now.
I have found it very effective at flea prevention. You do have to spray it on the animal about twice a week give or take.
I have the bottle in front of me and it does say that you can also use it to prevent ticks as well.
I have not yet used this, http://www.whupabug.com but I want to get some to try as well just to compare the two. I have read that they use this stuff in Africa with the notorious mosquitoes. They say it is highly effective as well.
They sell a flea and tick spray too.
Kiersten,
I really hope it works well for you. If you wouldn't mind, would you let me know how it works for you when you get it?
Since you live in an area where the ticks are so numerous, I would love to know how well it does.
I can tell you that when it is sprayed directly on and makes contact with the flea or tick, it works by interrupting the oxygen the bug gets through it's exoskeleton, thereby making the pest die on contact.
I want to know how effective it is at repelling the ticks from your dog.
The man from Cedarcide told me that you want to make sure you put a good dose of spray on the belly, backside, legs, chest and tail area as well as just around back of neck, and behind the ears.
I also spray the feet too.
I have yet to see one flea on them.
Good luck with it!
