my rottie pup is 10.5 weeks old, when i brought him home he was 7.5 weeks old. for the first week, he would not relieve himself in the crate or house. but in the second week he went in the crate once. since then it seems that he's been goin in there without hesitation. the crate is not too big for him and he hasnt had to stay in there for more than 3-4 hours at a time (except for at night when im asleep) and i have cleaned him and the crate thuroughly. any thing else i can do?
Greetings,
I just went through this same thing with my pup, only he went all the time in the crate ( he was confused and thought thats where he was to go) I stoped putting him in the crate and watched him like a hawk, then I took him outside every hour and constantly told him to go potty when he did go potty I gave him a treat(which by the way I just got into big trouble by my vet because I was giving him around 10 treats a day) Now I use two pieces of his food and he thinks its a treat. Anyway it took about a week before he got the idea that he gets rewarded for going outside and not inside. I've had him 3 weeks now and he knows that he is to go outside, but he still goes in the crate at night (problem) he is now starting to come up to me an whine when he wants out and as soon as he goes he rushes up to me for his treat because he knows he did good and I praise the heck out of him. The first week i was sooooo frustrated but now with this method its working.
Good luck
Emtjewel
Just be patient. Act like the pup just found a cure for cancer when he goes outside along with the treat. I know its difficult sometimes but do whatever you can to try and catch him eliminating in the crate this way you can verbally reprimand him. I hate to sound like a broken record but just be patient. Some pups will drive you crazy and others get it down real fast.
Listen to what Chuck F had said. He is very right. read more to the article by Ed suggested by Vince and always ask yourself why the puppy did wrong and refer to Ed articles. The important thing is that did you take away the water during nighttime and did you sent him outside with the good outside command to do the business? ask yourself pleased!!
