I brought my present pup home at 9 wks and within 2 days he was sleeping 6-7 hours through the night in his crate with no accidents. And I was quite ready to get up with him if he made any noise at all. He just didn't need to. So why not all day? Yes....6-7 hours at night. That is undoubtably true...by cutting off the water at a certain time. But now, if you want this young pup to hold it another 8 hours during the day...are we to then pull his water in the morning too? When can the pup drink? I agree with the advice given previously. I will say that with a few modifications though....soon he will be able to hold it this long. I would start completely from scratch. Praise for eliminating outside like the pup just cured cancer. I will add that you must keep the crate super super super super super super clean! If the pup has an accident...clean him and clean the crate with a neutralizer like a Natures miracle or something like it. Don't use amonia...this will entice him to piss there again.
Agree wholeheartedly Chuck. As I said I was always quite willing to get up at night if necessary and never limited water except in the morning. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
By allowing the dog to have free access to water within the crate only caused the crate to be drowned in water for the entire day. I tried a normal water bowl..it was history in seconds, i tried securing a small bucket via the handle to the crate with a snap..she riped off the handle from the bucket and the bucket was history, I tried a water bottle similar to a hamster bottle; well that lasted all of two days before she destroyed that too. So...rather than have the crate soaked in water and urine for the day; it worked to allow her to drink when she gets out of the crate in the AM, comes in for another drink and then back outside to potty before being in the crate for the day. When I or hubby arrive home; she's out of the crate, drinks when she wants to and then before bed...we always take our final walk outside.
I'd rather have her in a dry clean crate for the day than a soaked one.
I really appreciate all the responses to my question. I talked with my son and made sure he knew that Zeus had to go out more often the he had been letting him out and to make sure he went when he was out. Since then no problems or accidents. Thanks again for all your help.
I have found that baby shampoo is very gentle on any dogs skin, and you are able to wash the puppy a little more without worrying about drying him out, while keeping him smelling fresh. Baby powder is also a good idea after a bath as long as you brush it out well.
