This morning we were charged by another dog a the park. A husky who's owner was at least a quarter mile away. I stepped in front of Tasha and yelled "NO!" in a very deep voice. The dog stopped for a minute before he attempted to circle around behind me.
At this point Tasha was barking and growling at him, up on her hind legs.
I gave him a good loud "AGGGH!!" and stepped toward him stamping my feet. He finally turned around and ran back toward his owner, and then past her, over to a guy flying a remote control airplane. I yelled at her pretty good, and when she finally got him back they left quickly.
I'm interested to know if that Direct Stop stuff works. We live near the water and it's too windy for pepper spray.
I might ask my dad if he can get me a retractable police baton, too. I'd carry a stick, but we wouldn't get very far walking with one. Tasha thinks all sticks are for playing fetch!
We carry Direct Stop at our training facility. Good stuff.... Won't stop a dog that is in the red zone, but will definitely help with those loose punk dogs.
As a first line of defense I would feel better using something that is not harmful. Most of the time the dogs are probably just very poorly trained goofballs, but you never know. I would be less likely to blast them with pepper spray until it's already too late.
Maybe if every loose dog who charged us got a face full of citronella the owners will be more likely to keep 'em on leash!
