I'm babysitting a friend's bischon mix puppy over the weekend and what work it is! it's pushing me beyond my level of patience. i've got another dog in the house too and while he's super obedient, the 2 dog dynamic is tough. so anyhow, this pup is 7-8 months and has a lot of energy and a few quirks that I can't figure out if it's personality, lack of training, or because he's a puppy and that's what they do.
- I believe this pup does not get regular walks from his owners. I walk my dog an hour a day. so the past few days has been this pup going agro on the leash. pulling in all sorts of manners. is this expected of a pup of his age or is this lack of training? As a side note i've been training him with food to walk nicely on a leash. it works well in the controlled environment but it will be some serious dedication from the owners to get him to behave more calmly.
- even after the walks the pup has bounds of energy. It feels like the walk did nothing. What I end up having to do is tether him to myself and ignore his whining. eventually he gave up. is this the right recourse? i let him roam free the first day but my patience is gone so I straight up restricted all his freedom. i thought Ed was being extreme when he advocated this but I'm 100% on board now.
- feeding 2 dogs is quite the work. I feed my dog raw. the owners feed their pup crap kibble. when i managed to separate them and feed them separately, my dog eats just fine... the pup ignores his food. i'm not sure if it's jealousy or what. it feels like the pup wants to be near the my dog or something. The pup had no interest in the bowl that i defrosted the raw meat in though. so is this the 2nd dog dynamic at work or are puppies just fickle about meal times? i recall the owners telling me they would just leave food out for 20 mins and if he ate it then good, if not, oh well. My dog is so hungry he eats his raw food and then wants the kibble on top of it.
- lastly, are there any books out there that get into what to expect each month of a puppies life as they grow into adulthood? i wanted to get the Art of raising a puppy by the new monks of skete but the book said it only covered the first few months. this really is for my own curiosity as I don't intend on owning a puppy for my next dog.
