I recently purchased a used dogtra 282ncp (two dog model). Jake and Dixon have been wearing the collars on and off for several weeks now; yesterday I began trying to find their working level per Ed's dvd.
I think the included points are too short and not making good contact. Dixon seemed to start noticing the stim at 28-30 (he would turn his head and look at the floor around him curiously but was still laying down calmly). Jake did not seem to feel the stim at any level up to 50 at which I stopped because I figured something was wrong. I did adjust the collar several times and am positive I had it tight enough but the points just don't seem to find any skin through all the fur.
I'm assuming the collars came with the 1/2" points... is that the standard?
I noticed the replacement points come in 3/4" or 1". Do those of you who work with the dogtra and gsd's have a preference?
The 1/2" were standard on my NCP1700 and I would assume that's the case for the other collars. I had issues with my Dogtra on my Cane Corso. He has a thick coat, lots of skin folds under that collar. I could have it so tight on him he would be choking and it would still shift and be unreliable for making contact with his skin.
I recently got the 3/4 contacts, and they have been working like a charm. It's like a new collar. I don't have to make the collar extremely tight, it can shift around, and I still get a reliable contact all the time.
Also, the measurements in inches are rounded and not exact, I found that mm measurements to be exact. The 1/2'' probes are 12mm, 3/4 probes are 19mm, and the 1'' probes are 25mm (from bottom of the nut to the top).
I use the 3/4 inch now for most of my clients, and I love them. I have used the 1 inch on malamutes and other breeds with really long or thick coats, but the 3/4 inch seem to be the best choice for most. If the dog I am working with has really short hair than I use the 1/2 inch. You could order the dogtras with the contact points that you want already in place. The nice thing about the longer points is that you can keep the collar a little looser.
