I asked around the feed stores till someone gae me the number for someone who raised chickens. I gave her a call and asked if I could buy a couple peeps off of her the next time she got a batch. I paid her 5 bucks a chick which made it worth her while. Since she ordered about 200 at a time she didn't miss the 4 I bought. Plus I got the added benefit of using her as a connection if I ever needed chicken advice.
If the feed stores don't have any idea, see if any high schools in your area have Vo-Ag departments or FFA clubs. Or get a hold of some 4h members. Hopefully one of those resources helps.
I know there's one website that ships as little as 4 chicks at a time. When I get home tomorrow I will dig out the address for you. Always get a couple extra peeps. Sometimes you lose a couple for no apparent reason.
The feed stores in my area will have chicks next week! They will sell as little as 5 at a time. They usually have RI Reds, Barred Rock, and last year they sold me 3 Golden Comets..My Golden Girls, Dorothy, Rose and Blanche!
Thanks Tammy! Could you provide specific names of feed stores in the area? I'm in Metrowest Boston (Framingham-Natick area). You can PM me if that makes more sense.
I sent you the link for the chicks and perhaps a coop, another idea for building a coop would be to contact a local Vocational school. They often have many students looking for work, or the school looks for projects the kids can work on. If you wanted to order a design from the place that Will suggested, this might help with cost, and the time of you building it yourself!
