hi,
now that I have Dark (my new dog) I was reminded of how much they can spread the water around the house when drinking.
He is quite a large dog. I was thinking that maybe instead of the regular drinking bowl I could use a plastic bucket. That way the water won't be spread around the house as much. What are your thoughts about this?
I also saw that there is a special water bowl available on this site. Does anyone have any experience with this? If so I would like to hear about it.
Thanks for the help,
Eitan Waks

This one?

It's great! It keeps the water in the bowl.
I have that in one room and a no-tip dog dish on large plastic mats in other rooms.

I'm hinky about plastic food and water dishes--not because I've had a bad experience, but because I've read about dogs that have skin/lip reactions to a chemical in some plastics. I don't know how common it is, but there you go.
If you get a bucket, how about a metal one?
I use a super-heavy glazed ironstone bowl for water.

Yes, I should've added that I never leave the polypropylene dish in the sun or near a heat source.
I also have the stainless steel bowls from LB:

These are nice and flat rather than tippy and I use them in the other rooms.

I'm with Connie and Tracy...I stick with stainless or ceramic (that isn't cracked or chipped at all). Both are non-reactive. There are just too many toxins in the environment that we can't avoid to make adding any unnecessary ones a good thing to do.
(I'll bet your tail is wagging as much as Dark's. )

I actually do have one of the polypropylene bowls. It's the one in the carpeted living room. (I have a water bowl in almost every room.)
But again, I think it's very important to keep polypropylene away from any heat source (including sunlight).
And yes, some dogs do react to plastics. That's a good thing to be aware of.

I also use a Brita pitcher for refilling the water bowls.

Connie,
yes, I do use the filter! LOL. I thought these were only available here in Israel.
I think I'm going to purchase the stainless steel bowl and the water bowl suggested in the beginning of the thread.

Eitan...is the water getting around the house because it's coming off the dogs muzzle after he drinks?
Or is he playing in it or something.
I don't think there's any kind of bowl that will remedy what comes off the dogs muzzle, i think that's just par for the course wih dogs.
The only thing that I found helped a bit was putting a fair sized area rug (one that can go in the washing machine) under his eating area. That way after he strolls away after drinking the "drips" tend to fall mostly on the area rug, rather that on the floor.
Nothing worse that walking around in stocking feet and stepping in a a nice little puddle of water and drool...lol
Don't complain....TRAIN!!! |

Wendy,
the water is getting around the house because he drinks in a sloppy manner. It's kind of cute, but very messy. What ends up happening is that some water gets out of the bowl and then when he moves away from that area he steps in the water, and ends up leaving tracks all over the house.
I think I'm going to try the water bowl suggested by the first poster. It's worth a try. If not, I'll just put a rug under the drinking area.
