My GSD has been on a natural diet for about a month now and just by feeling his side I can tell he has lost some weight. He is 95 lbs. and can easily carry 5 more lbs. Currently, he is getting at least 2 lbs. (split between 2 meals) of food each day, but I believe he should get between 2.5 - 3 lbs. So my question is how much food could I feed at any given meal without upsetting his stomach? Granted this is probably trial and error, but don't believe feeding 2.5 - 3 lbs for a single meal can be good? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Same thing happened to my dogs when I first started feeding raw, actually one gained and one lost a few. If you think 2.5 # a day is going to suit him better, simply add a 1/4 # more each meal, or give him a larger breakfast and smaller dinner. It doesn't have to be EXACT at each meal, so don't stress over that. You could even start with a week of adding 1/4 more to make sure he is okay with the extra food (at 95 lbs. I expect him to be just fine) then go up again in a week.
Meant to ask.. what has he been eating so far, and have you experienced any stomach upset?
Also... can you post a pic of your dog from the side and from looking down toward his back? I used to think "too thin" was one thing when now I know it can be "just right"... Especially with GSDs, a bit lighter is far better than a bit heavier (hips).
He has been getting chicken necks, legs, thighs, & heats. The hearts have been like 2x per week. Turkey necks, ground beef, and lamb shanks. I mix up the veggies every week and he gets them every other day and about 1/4 cup. No upset stomach at all, but he had a spout of loose stool when I gave him chicken wings. The vet did a test on his stool and there was no bacteria present so it might have been the additional fat on the wings?
