Yesterday I noticed that my two year old German Shepherd was having diarrhea. It was a pudding consistency. I also noticed something strange. I saw him licking his feces yesterday. He has never done this. Well this morning my father saw him vomit in his crate. I didn't see it but he said it was a lot and it looked like feces. Now this really concerns me and I'm taking him to the vet I just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas what it could be. Just to give you a history background. Three and a half weeks ago he was neutered. He's cryptorchid and his surgeon said it was the hardest surgery of this kind she has had. It took three incisions to find the testicle. He has been recovery very well until yesterday. I don't know if it's related or not. He's personality is the same. The same energy. I'm not going to feed him this morning of course.

Please call the vet and see them today. Please call now.
Please let us know.

Intestinal obstruction or peritonitis isn't necessarily the trigger for vomit that looks or smells like fecal material (because it can be from a dog ingesting it), but it's so potentially serious that I would want the vet to see the dog immediately.

Thanks everyone,
Just got back from the vet. My main vet who is great and a holistic pro raw vet is an hour and a half away. She suggested I go to a local vet instead of the long drive to her and that's what I did. They faxed over Enoch's file to the vet so they would know his history. They check his temperature which was fine. His blood work looked fine. They wanted to get a fecal sample but was unable to so we have to bring it back today or tomorrow morning. He was concerned about parasites. He said he wasn't concern about anything more serious, i.e. bowel obstruction, because Enoch wasn't listless and his blood work looked fine. He thought the vomit was because of Enoch eating his feces and that upset his stomach. What I want to know and the vet casually said it was boredom was why would Enoch now eat his feces? Could parasites cause this behavior? So we're going to wait and see. I'm glad it doesn't appear to be more serious but of course I'm going to keep an eye on him. What do you guys think of the vet's summary?

Sometimes I have seen dogs lick at / eat feces when they have runny poo - think it's because the nutrients haven't properly been absorbed and therefore is 'food'. If he isn't making a habit of it I doubt that there is any boredom involved - sounds like a generic answer the vet trots out when asked about it.
I personally wouldn't be happy going to an unfamiliar vet except in an emergency. It sounds like the tests etc. are well in hand, keep a close eye on Enoch and if in doubt get a 2nd opinion.

Thanks Tanith,
Yeah, I wasn't happy about going to an unknown vet but I felt it was an emergency. I'm going to keep a close eye on Enoch and if I feel he isn't getting better or the proper care I'm taking him to my vet. My vet is going to be in tomorrow and I'm going to talk to her and see what she thinks about what this vet had to say.
