Do you mind sharing your experience of the protection portion? Mine refused to bark during the hold and bark for the longest time. We eventually did a puppy circle (i think that is what they called it) and she figured it out. Now we are working on her "confidence", she'll releases too soon.
Do you still train with the rott and does your shepherd participate? And you are right, it is a fun experience and has helped us both.
I retired my Rott and now I have two Shepherds I train. Andy always had a kind of nervy aggression. He didnt like the stick. When he was 5 he started having prostrate problems and I had to neuter him. So that nervy aggression diminished and he started coming off the sleeve and trying to re-bite to avoid the stick.
His barking was a little inconsistant. Sometimes he would go 50 in a row and other times he'd go 5 and stop and then start again. That kind of stuff.
