Melissa,
Why stop the fish oil prior to spay/surgery? Just curious as that my girl goes in on the 28th to be spayed and have a Dermoid Sinus cyst removed from her neck area.
Sarah, fish oil has a blood-thinning effect, so it is generally recommended to discontinue it (depends on the doctor, but usually about 10 days prior to surgery) to minimize the chance of excess bleeding

Dogs do indeed have heart disease, but not the kind of heart "attack" that we have. One of the major benefits to humans of fish oil involves cholesterol, such as helping to boost levels of HDL ("good") cholesterol -- but this is not an issue for dogs because they don't get arteriosclerosis.
Still, the heart issues dogs do have (such as any of the several problems that lead to CHF) improve in some dogs when they are given fish oil. (Probably more than "some," IMHO, but the testing of long-chain 3s on dogs with heart disease is way less intense/widespread than on humans, with humans' arterial problems).
Long-chain 3s appear to reduce dogs' abnormal heart rhythms, but probably have other beneficial heart effects as well, since heart disease has a significant inflammation component and long-chain 3s appear to reduce inflammation throughout the body.
My 11 y/o has a scarred mitral valve which has led to some enlargement So I've done a bit of research into heart issues that affect dogs.
Thankfully, per her latest ultrasound, her daily dose of enalapril seems to be helping to keep it in check. She also has been on fish oil (though it was kind of hit and miss for a while before her allergies started acting up again earlier this spring) for joints and allergies. I've heard bits and pieces about how it is good for heart trouble, but not a lot of specifics - thanks for the added info!
