I was at the hardware store this afternoon. A hickory axe handle looked like it would be pretty useful too.
The trouble with carrying that is that it could be readily identified as a weapon, where a walking stick would not.
Depends on who you are (female), and when and where you are walking. When I was in college I regularly carried a piece of heavy pipe (ummm, a weapon) when I made the mile long walk from the parking lot to the dorm at 2 or 3 am after the late night UPS shift. The campus cops saw me several times and never said "boo" to me. Neither did anyone else. *snicker*
