Before I knew anything about RMB I though I was doing the right thing by going to BARF, as soon as I saw they were not the same and I goof, I primarily feed RMB, but, once or so a week there is a BARF thrown into the diet. Am I hurting my dog? He seems fine, chow hound. 13 weeks male GSD 27 Lbs. Also is that a good weight for his age? menu consist of mostly chicken, sardines, tuna, eggs, beef for stew, plus center cut beef, all this is human grade meat. The BAEF comes in handy after I give chicken wings. or turkey necks, which I am scare to give from an article I had saw. The Barf is about done, one more sleeve, could I or should I buy another case; If I am not hurting my Dog? Dan

Dan, do you mean you had been buying a commercial raw diet?
BARF means "biologically appropriate raw food" (or bones and raw food, or biologically available raw food). RMBs are a part of BARF. They are the raw meaty bones that a BARF diet is based on.
Now, I think you may be saying that you bought a commercial BARF diet?
You have a growing puppy, and his calcium is crucial. If you are guessing at the homemade part, I would rather see you use a commercial product.
When you say "chicken," do you mean without bones? You mentioned stopping chicken wings because of some article you read.
Again, I urge that you do not give a puppy of this age any random diet. If you are afraid to feed digestible bones, which have the calcium that he absolutely needs, then you should feed a commercial preparation instead.
Hi Connie, I am feeding Raw, regular chicken, bones and all. everything I am feeding Chico is the same grade of food that I purchase for myself. Only before I did much reading, I had already bought a case of barf, witch he only gets if the content of bone to meat is too much, example chicken wings or turkey necks. I don't need to buy barf, I have enough variety of meats and continue learning. He also eats chicken organs, the article I saw mention that turkey necks could be swallow whole or in big chunks to obstruct his esophagus, so I stop giving him turkey necks. I also know about the Dr. who did the switch from raw to barf, only after He made a name for Himself. I hope I explained better this time around. Dan

I brought my last 2 pups on raw (my oldest was converted at age 2 (now age 5) and you definitely want to be careful about your ratios.
A BARF diet is differnet depending on who you talk to. Billington had it down as something like 30% meat, 30% bone, 15% liver, 10% veggie and 5% fruit (hhh, I'm not at 100% but you get the idea!) I followed the diet for 6 months and my dogs at the time didn't do well on the veggie part. I pulled my dogs off the veggie and fruit and they did much better. I did add tripe to the diet.
I learned a valuable lesson that you have to do what works for your dog BUT make absolutely sure that you have enough calcium and minerals for your pup. I always keep meat/bone about 50/50 and I always have some organ meat. I feed some all ground meat (with bone in) and some whole. If you are not sure, buy a commertial raw diet.

Thanks Connie, I will incorporate the rabit, and beef heart slowly, what about beef tongue? I have a lot of meat from the commissary at my disposal, I also read the Yahoo group on raw, plus our own Leerburg columns. Dan
