Nero is adorable. You are going to have so much fun with him.
I use verbal markers, but I was having trouble teaching Ripley to back up in heel position luring with treats, so I got out the clicker. It took 3 reps to teach (against a wall) and now he's got it for life. The clicker is an amazing tool.
Thanks Connie for commenting! Basically the concept of a clicker just sort of throws me off. I lack any real dog training experience because this is my first dog, but I just can't imagine always having that clicker on me. I say "yes" almost all day long it feels like and having to do both click and mark just is overwhelming to me. I would almost say it is better to use your voice and have the training take a little longer than to try with the clicker. That's just me though. I think my wife's tone just sort of nails it, and it's hard for me to compete lol!

... I was also happy to discover that there was no problem with using both (with each properly loaded, of course). ...

My fault for the confusion here. "Using both" meant sometimes one, sometimes the other. But I said it in such a way that it looks like clicking and verbally marking together.
I use almost all verbal marker, but once you load the clicker, I found that the clicker was great for me to teach a new behavior ... faster, in my experience.
So that's what I meant by "both." Not doing both at the same time.
Yeah it is a cute mix huh!? The way it happened was my wife's family has a boxer (sort of small female), and she went in heat, that's when the crap hit the fan. The neighbor male Chihuahua got into their yard.
Long story short, he didn't even take her out for dinner. Skipped right to the love. Now he acts like she doesn't exist and doesn't pay puppy support. haha
Joking aside, I originally didn't want one at all. I thought they would be really ugly! I also am in love with Border Collies and Malinois so it definitely wasn't my breed of choice.
Luckily my wife convinced me and thank God she did because I love our little Nero!

I won't say who* on this board originally said the following about a tiny-breed male and a bigger breed female mating:
"Someone must have put him up to it."
