If it's in the budget for you, and you have a good practictioner available in your area, I would also recommend seeing a canine chiropractor once he's back to normal and the bruising has had a chance to heal. Just to make sure that everything is still fitting the way its supposed to and moving correctly.
Darn, I don't know how I missed this one! To treat severe bruising its ice for the first 48 hours, then heat. Oops! Well you can always let him sleep on a heating pad to help with any residual stiffness.

My other dog ALWAYS ended up hurting himself either on a Saturday night or a sunday. So of course we would have to go to the Emergency Vet if it couldn't wait until the next day.
