One of my friends has a 2 1/2 months old GSD.
The pup is definitely the dominant one of the litter. His female died of parvo just a month after delivering the litter. All pups have been sold off,but this one named"Rambo"has remained with the family.Rambo is not only dominant but also very very aggressive. In his house the pup plays and approaches me well and good. But once away from home he has bitten me thrice for just petting, inspite of me giving a scruff shake. When on the road it barks and protects the owner as a 2yrs old dog.It sometimes even bites the owner. In their house they are ignorant about dog behaviour and me being just a novice enthusiast cannot know much.I need quick and practical help as soon as possible. Is the dog suitable for such an environment? How to train and subdue his hyperaggressive nature? Suggest help
It also seems to me that you are more interested in finding a solution to the problem than the owners are. Any chance of them giving you the pup? He seems to be a tough customer, but not beyond hope.
This board would also be a good resource if you have further questions.
Your comment on the pup biting you despite shaking by the scruff of the neck is one I have read many times on this board. Senior members on this board know my correction philosophy of pups. But this does not apply to dominance. The proper level of a correction is the bare minimum it takes to stop the unwanted action. This ranges from an angry stare to hanging a dog over a fence (that was for you Brendan). If this pup repeated biting you despite a scruff shake than this was too low a level of correction. You must find the right level for your pup.
At 2 1/2 months we are talking about 11 weeks or so. I'm wondering if the scruff shake was firm enough. I believe on Ed's site he speaks of shaking them until they scream.(That is for pups that show dominance) Although to a novice this may seem harsh, it falls under the 1 good correction is worth 1000 nagging corrections. I'm just wondering whether the scruff shake you used was up to this level or not.
