I have trained my dogs individually to sit while I put their leashes on. Now I am doing it as a group. My Cody-man ( jack russel mix) gets very excited when the other dogs are getting their leashes on with him. I have been turning away from him arms crossed and put his leash down every time he is over excited, and I do this with the other dogs as well. My other dogs are calm most of the time, but Cody excites them.
Do any of you have some tips for me. I have been practicing them getting their leashes on a couple of times a day. But even though they have improved, it takes me quite a while to get them all leashed and out the door. Any suggestions?
Thanks sharon (I have 3 terriors, 4,3,2 years old, full of energy, have had them for about 2 years. all rescues at the age of 1 about, except Cody-we rescued him at 12 weeks)
Are the dogs all mingling around together while you put the leashes on or are they supposed to be on a sit or down or place during this process? Personally, I would work on one of those commands (outside of leash attaching time) and then begin using it while attaching the leashes. You might also try attaching the leash a few times a day when they are NOT going outside; simply as an obedience exercise. Sit/mark yes!/treat. Sit/attach leash/mark yes!/treat, etc... Try to take the "excitement factor" of going outside away from the leash process.
Barbara: Yes, my dogs are in the down, or sit when I begin attaching their leashes. they are very excited, if they move I correct them and put their leashes away and turn away from them. They get that point pretty well. It is when cody is so excited, it sets them all off. Yes, I have thought of putting on their leashes off and on during the day. Thanks for the confirmation, I will begin that tomorrow. I use positive reinforcement and will continue to do so. thanks so much for your input. This summer we are working on our manners, and social issues.

Excellent idea Barbara. I have 2 dogs (both Pit mix's and 75 lbs) When I go to get Jeters leash he freaks out. He is excellent with the down stay. I always did what Sharon does. I would turn away from him and stop the leash process until he is calm. I think your way is more effective. I will give it a try.
Jeter gets so worked up he has trouble controlling himself.
OK Rob...lol. I knew it was just a matter of time before I took a ribbing on that one. The truth is that my son is the big Yankee fan and I got the dog for him so it was his choice to name him. My other dog is Dakota. My daughter named her. She just liked the name.
I got Jete's(as we call him) from a shelter at 4 months old. He has some anxiety issues. he gets so worked u as I reach for the leash that he at times can be impossible to leash up.
I have a small entryway where I hang the leashes and both he and Dakota come running when they hear me go for the leashes. Jeter gets so anxious that he has snapped at Dakota. If I were to try and go through the ritual of getting their leashes and not taking them out in order to desensitize him he would not let me breath until I took him out.
If I put him in his crate he would whine and shake until I took him out. Once the introduction to a walk or run is there he wont let go of it until I take him.
