I am in the Ann Arbor area, and when I can afford to, I would like to take my Doberman to individual or group classes. Does anyone have any recommendations? I have to walk my dog with a prong collar, and I don't want to go to a trainer that will freak out and say I am hurting him.

Ask them what they've done with dogs as far as any kind of different venues or sports. It may not be the single most important criteria, but it does give someone a verifiable amount of hands on experience.
