Dennis, I am in Boston. The SPCA idea is a good one. The MSPCA here is a pretty strong orgianization and they are located not too far from where I live.
I will check into it to see if they offer a Feisty Fido class or something like that. Obedience is going well, mostly from what I have learned here.
The funny thing about paying all that money for training was that I found myself in between classes ignoring what they told me and fixing little problems using marker training.
As an example, they wanted me to use leash pressure to get her into a down. With my dog if you do that she gets kinda "screw you!" about it and gets mouthy. She would do it eventually but she would fight and then flop down all crooked.
So I started working the foundation for our down from motion with markers and she now drops like a champ!
When the time oomes and you want to work her under the higher distraction of other dogs, try to find a dog park with a good fence that you can work on the other side of, or something along those lines (people playing tennis, kids playing baseball, etc.).
