Hi all; need some thoughts please. I started adding supplements last Friday to Vashti's food. (vit e, salmon oi, super c, kelp, alfalfa) Well she got diarrhea so I backed off the supplements and by Monday stools were back to logs. Once they were I added back in the vit e and salmon oil and we have diarrha again. I pulled supplements out and have lessened amount of food. Starting yesterday we have gone from pudding diarrhea to water diarrhea back to pudding diarrhea today. She is still playful, is not drinking a whole bunch of water but really doesn't normally anyway, so looks and acts fine. She is 5 months old now and on raw diet. Since its thickening back up it seems we are on the way back to normal. Am I right in thinking that or should I be getting her to the vet? We are planning on going to the vet anyway on Saturday for her last puppy visit but not sure if I should wait? I don't want to make a big deal if I don't need to but really kind of don't trust myself a whole lot since I didn't even know Bruno had cancer.
Hi Lori, I found supplements to be tricky things with my dogs. Several days ago tried to give Suzie kelp and alfalfa again and got the same result - 24hrs of thin pudding and lots of stomach noise Will give her even tinier amount the next time. Same thing happened with yogurt but somehow we got to the point where she tolerates it. I knew exactly why Suzie was having diarrhea and decided not to call the vet. If in doubt you could always call your vet and discuss it.
I did pull all supplements out but was just trying to add back in the vit e and salmon oil. Is there a timeframe on when her stool should be back to normal?
Ana, I did call the vet's office but they just said I would have to bring her in. I feel like I know its the supplements but I guess I'm just a nervous nanny right now.
Maybe her stomach hadn't completely settled down before you reintroduced the salmon oil. She might just have a really sensitive gut, especially being young. Around that age my puppy got pudding for days on end just from trying a new training treat. She's not at all like that now.
I would probably take her off of it, wait for a few days of normal poop and reintroduce it very gradually.
What kind of salmon oil are you using? If its in a pump you could start with just a half pump and if things are normal add a little more until you get to the correct amount.
I'm no expert, but this is the kind of thing that has worked for me. If Connie, Aaron or Michael Wise say any different listen to them.
