A co-worker of mine has asked me for help with an issue regarding a narcotics K9 assigned to one of our jails. The handler is going out on maternity leave and will be off 6 months. She would plan on continuing with the training of the K9 while off. She was informed that her K9 would be taken from her and reassigned to another officer while she was off. The replacement officer does not necessarily have any real experience.
For you K9 law enforcement guys and gals, I have my experienced opinion but I'd like to here yours since mine will surely be looked at as biased. Is this done in your department? Will it be detrimental to the K9 to go back and forth? Opinions and experiences would be great. Thanks
Chris, there are several folks who were/are K9 handlers, hopefully someone with that specific set of experiences will happen along and render an opinion.
As for me, I can understand the superior officer making this decision wanting to keep the dog in service. S/he might even be doing your co-worker a favor by allowing her to focus on her own maternal needs during her leave.
That said, continuity of training, and training methods is important. If it were me making the decision, I'd have the replacement handler engaging in all kinds of training prior to your colleague leaving, then I'd pay (or arrange for) your colleague to come in periodically to co-train the dog with the replacment officer, or to at least oversee the dog's training. I'd basically say, "you two work out a training regimen that will maintain the dog's skills during handler #1's absence." It's in the dog's best interest that the two officers collaborate during this transition.
