Not that I'd ever even think about breeding either of my nervy, GSD's ..but this conversation came up the other day and it got me thinking.
I've read something around here before but couldn't find it again...Does a male dog's temperament change after he is bred the first time? A coworker is dead set that her mastiff will begin humping things after he is bred and I doubt that.
Also..
My white male is due to be neutered soon..he is VERY interested in other dogs at all times and will lick up urine at every opportunity to the point of seeming obsessed and proceed to froth all over the place and chatter his teeth. I can't stand it and when we're visiting family he constantly seeks out their dogs genitals, male or female, altered or not and does the same-I always have to keep a sharp eye to avoid an embarrassing mess of foamy drops all over their floors or some poor sap's lap.
I read somewhere it's a hyper-sexual behavior and light corrections never stop him from trying again the next time he's let outside.
Any of you experienced this?
I know he's testing with an organ in the roof of his mouth, but I can't find much else on it. I'm hoping neutering will eliminate this because it drives me nuts mopping the floors every time he decides to shove his nose in the packmate's groins here at home...which is alot.

The "can I get your license and registration" ass sniffing does go away a bit after 60 days I've noticed with my youngest male papillon who I neutered at 20 months old. He still sniffs with interest but not nearly to the deep contemplation level he used to.
I suspect you're allowing your boy a bit too much freedom to pursue his doggie nature. Maybe I'm a jerk but usually my boys were kept on a shorter leash. I would never correct a dog for this behavior that I'm fostering by allowing him to start it by mingling with a pack. On the flip side I would correct/redirect for it if he wants to blow me off while on lead. You need to control the situation if you don't like a behavior. A leash and a crate are your friend.
As far as the humping behaviour, I never noticed a difference in my boys before or after, so to speak. If they did it before, they'll do it after. I have a neutered male that if not watched/corrected, will hump anything - (poor cat!, he is not a toy dog). The intact male I have doesn't hump anything, he was bred once - to a girl that was spayed as soon as her cycle was done. I haven't noticed any change in his attitude at all. I think humping in dogs is more a habit caused by dominance, not sexual activity.
I would be interested to see if anyone has noticed a difference, my dogs are all weird after all. lol
I know you are talking about boys but
My senior female is a humper, especially with certain new dogs or when she gets really excited. She is intact and has never been bred.
She is so normal otherwise, and stops when I tell her to, that I never really worried about it.
My intact male was a big time PITA humper as a pup. He tired it with me once or twice as a young pup & I redirected him & that was that. He did continue do it freequently with others but it eventually faded as he got to be about 6 months old or so. I think that the more of an issue you make of it the more it will continue.
ETA...I have a whole female & she did it a bit as a pup, but it was never really an issue with her at all.
The worse case I ever saw was with my aunt's male miniture poodle. He was so very bad, but then he didn't have any manners or training of ANY kind either. He was all over her grandkids all the time. It was really ridiculous that no one did anything to stop this. If I grabbed him & stopped him, my aunt had a fit & said that I was hurting her dog. The vet said that neutering him was not going to make any difference at all. Not sure if that was totally true or not, but he was about 2 when my aunt had him neutered. She moved to Florida after that so I never saw the dog anymore.
Inside the house he is always monitored. I don't let him roam around out of sight or be out with the other two when I am gone-they all have crates and are used daily. In fact, when everyone's out and I'm relaxing I have certain rooms blocked with gates so they can't go off where I can't see.
I had him on leash for the longest time and it did stop him only because he couldn't ever reach anybody, but I don't think it helped..unless I want to keep him on leash in my house his entire life. I use the e-collar now. And when he does it he is told "Quit" ( my 'leave it' )which he has knows means to leave the item/person/dog alone..80% of the time he immediately stops but now and then he'll get a nick for continued licking or doing it faster when I say the word.
When I say light corrections, it doesn't exclude hard ones in the past. I have a Dogtra 280, for those unfamiliar with it, the collar can go up to 127. I have nicked him on 80 and my fiance even higher when we thought the corrections might not be serious enough for him. He'd still try again the next day, sometimes even the same day. When let outside to do his business he will trot around with his nose down until he finds a spot of urine from one of the other two ( even if it's old )and have at it, often before he even relieves himself fist thing in the morning.
When visiting friends, he begins leashed and when everyone settles and is calm he gets some free time with the e-collar on. The dogs will interact and sometimes even play a little and he'll randomly throughout the visit, bury his nose into a crotch feverishly and sometimes even root around to the point in nearly shoving the dogs leg up to have a pee test session. One of my mom's girls submissively urinates to strangers and he will make a beeline for that puddle every single time it happens.
None of my dogs ever humped, and I doubt that my friend's mastiff will either, he is very laid back and submissive. I was just curious if he'd be more interested in dogs after being bred, more extreme reaction to females in heat or harm the relationship with his owner in any way..etc..etc.
