I sold a puppy to a lady who took her in for a fecal 2 weeks after she took the puppy home. The puppy had NO SYMPTOMS of any tummy trouble. Puppy came back positive for giardia and now she's mad at me. (her purchase agreement says that she is supposed to take the dog to the vet within 3 days of purchase.)
So she's really worried about catching it and is re-testing in 5 weeks and the vet told her 85% chance of killing it. If this dog comes back positive in 5 weeks I think the crap is gonna hit the fan. I'm pretty sure my purchase agreement would protect me from refunding her money and I did tell her I will always take the dog back. Don't want it to come to that...
Do you do routine fecals on litters or routine medicating? Any advice?
Treating giardia isn't done with the common de-wormers, typically flagyl. It also isn't the easiet to always find diagnostically. I think there is a new snap test out, that might be more accurate. It sounds like some over-reacting or owner misudnerstood? It can be corrected and shouldn't be that awfully expensive. Definitely not something to return a dog over, IMO. I can't remember if there is some environment issues involved more so than just picking up the stools and disposing of. If giardia is the one that makes it difficult to keep the dog free and yours are free, then the difficulty may be d/t her outside environment that the dog is constantly exposed to. Hope that made sense.
The best prevention (for anything) for humans is to wash the hands, and keep them out of the mouth.
I am a believer in routine fecal tests, especially in pups and new moms.
