when doing marker training without names to anything yet do you teach several things at once or one thing at a time until it is perfect?

Eliza, When I am marker training a new behavior, I keep it to that one behavior per session unless I hit a snag and then I go to something the dog knows so I can end on an "up" note. If the new behavior is being provided, I don't add anything else on that session.

Once they have a few behaviors under their belt, it is fun to ask for several in a session just to make them feel so proud of themselves!

Just keep it fun and short and try to always end with the dog doing well and getting rewarded and hugged.

Hi folks, here's an update of what happened.

We never went back to a dog club for 8yrs. So put off was i. I attended a few more, without the dog, but sadly saw the same training methods everywhere. zzzzzzzz

Found Training in Drive, Distance learning package from k9Pro and we took off! big time. This was what i wanted, needed. Training in drive, not training in circles!
We used Triangle of Temptation to this day.
Fantastic exercise.

It's been 9yrs since i posted this.
The 9 years have taught me:
Training in Drive, is what prefer. Rare to find a club that uses this. Plenty of info here tho, and other IPO/Schutzhund sites on it. And it works for me. It works for my dogs.

Last year, we returned to a dog club. A IPO club. And voila! all that i love to do, right there on a plate.
Bernie has the obedience side of things, like me, he's not so agile these days.
Tracking he has always done. But has spent past 6 months learning foot step tracking, and has nailed it too.
Never too old to teach a dog new tricks. We are both learning again.

We got another dog, trained it the same way, perfect manners, obedience, willingness to work.

Getting the 3rd dog/pup, in 8 weeks. Who also, will start IPO as a pup.

Dog training clubs, ive visited quite a few in Victoria in the past 9 yrs. And all were too slow, dogs losing drive or shut down completely it was so boring.
I needed a working dog kind of training, not dog obedience club style training. Funny how only k9pro seemed to get this, and intro'd me to training in drive. The only way to go for me. As I will switch off, when bored. Very fast. My tolerance for boredom is low. Working dogs too it seems.

I would advocate leaving any club that the handler finds boring. If it walks like duck, sounds like a duck, chances are..... YOU are right, and it IS boring.

Michael Ellis is the absolute best way to go with training through drive.

Training in drive always seems to open new doors for trainers who've learned through other methods. Now that I've learned to train good dogs in drive, nothing else will ever be fulfilling.

A lot of classes are willing to be very flexible if you ask. I'm starting a class next week that is going to let me do my own thing.
