Sharon, just a secret between us, before I came to this conclusion of hanging out with my pup, he was hyper,while I am taking the raw meats to feed him, he will jump, and if I got in front of him, that sucker has bitten my but, arms legs etc etc. Now we both are calmer, we spend more time together other than formal training, although we also do that. Kelly, one of the reason I got Chico is that I was out of balance, Pain both physically, and mentally. Gaining weight, and did I had enough sense to tell my Dr. what I needed. A dog, not any dog, but one that would challenge me although my limitations, so we went thru that learning curve, and still learning. Now I am more in tune with Chico's needs weather is a walk, or just play, or a massage, I am fortunate to have him in my life, and I am glad that I can provide his needs, whatever that might be at the moment, But I find that hanging out is like yoga, relaxing. no pressure, just learning each other, he is calmer thus I am calmer, he is not jumping, so I am less stress. and is all of training , formal and non formal. Dan you are a role model for anyone who has sunk unto a place from which it is not easy to get out of (and many never do). So many others choose the low effort methods - medication, alcohol, and despair when faced with such significant challenges.
Not you. You stared the situation right in the eyes, and chose the option you knew was not going to be just short of impossible. A hyperactive 'therapist' with teeth!
I tip my hat to you, sir, and feel fortunate you've chosen to grace this board with your experiences.
