The only problem with this method is that they fleas have already laid eggs in the carpet before they jump into the water, so your population numbers will probably stay the same unless you put something like DE or borax in the carpet to kill the eggs before they hatch.
Very true, it only gets the adults, that is why daily vacuuming (with daily dumping of the stuff into sealed bags, and cleaning is so important. I am going to try the DE tonight, we will see if I make a huge mess!

I hate fleas...
I used the light and water trap last year and it worked very well. Fleas hatch in the carpet and if they jump into the trap before they get onto the dog, or me (I'm highly allergic to them, and they love me), and eat a blood meal they can't lay their eggs. You can still get the population under control even if you don't treat the floor.
I tried DE and toxic spray on my floor with no measurable success. The light trap eliminated the fleas in the house.
hmm. Ok I have two questions. One: what is DE and where can I get it? Two: Finn has been scratching his hind legs and neck. I have frontlined (he got a bath less then 24 hours later due to handler mistake and potty accident) bought K9advantix and dosed him with one tube (had another accident this time it was hubby's fault) and then he got a 2nd tube to make sure he was covered. Vet says no fleas just a puppy thing but could it be?
We rent. They cleaned the carpets but there was two large labs here and when we black lit my carpet *gag* lets just say it was an interesting shade of yellow/green color. Would this lite test be something to consider doing in each room??
I am crazy I know but fleas give me the creeps and they are so hard to get rid of. Plus I am kinda paranoid when it comes to bugs. Never used to be this way, got pregnant and paranoid came attached.
None this morning in the bathroom dish, so hopefully all of the adults hopped into the dish and the cleaning will get rid of any eggs.
I forgot to mention, you have to shut the door and make sure there aren't people or animals in the room, that way the candle or light is the only warmth for them to be attracted to.
