It does vary by state...
"Virginia law permits insurers to exclude from a homeowner’s policy coverage for any liability caused by a dangerous animal, but only with the insured’s written and witnessed consent. A dangerous animal is one that has bitten, attacked, or inflicted injury on a person or a companion animal. Animal breed does not determine if the animal is dangerous. The law does not prevent an insurer from underwriting the risk presented by a dog that does not meet the dangerous animal definition. Such underwriting can result in increased policy premiums or refusing to issue or not renew a policy, according to Mr. George Lyle of the Virginia Bureau of Insurance."
Unless your state has just been one of the states added...I know Ohio an insurance company can't discriminate.
That's how I get around it. I live in Denver, too. I have a Presa Canario Mastiff, and my insurance company covers the house, but excludes coverage for any incidents involving the dog. You might check with the underwriters and see if that works. If leaves the door open for some trouble, but I take great care to contain and control Laya, so I'm not too worried about it.

Kelly, I believe everything happens for a reason. Yes, cliche, I know.
Maybe there is something in that particular insurance that would bite you on the ass later on. Maybe there is a better deal somewhere else. Maybe there is a need for a delay which you don't know yet, but will reveal itself later.
I totally agree. It's bull that they do stuff like that.
But I just gotta think that you don't need that particular insurance. You'll find what you need.
Thanks, Michael. We have insurance, and a fine insurance agent. Paul just thought he could get a deal somewhere else. He learned differently. He was also educated about the stupid breed discrimination that's out there. He said they had a list that this lady looked at and as soon as she found German Shepherd on it, that was the end of it. Didn't even discuss higher rates or anything like that.
I told Paul that even if Drift hadn't been on the list, I wouldn't do business with a company that does blanket discrimination against breeds like that. The fact that they have a list like that tells me that they are ignorant and won't listen to the customer.
Maybe now Paul won't roll his eyes and walk away when I get going on a rant about stupid dog politics

It's interesting cause we have AAA (Automobile Club of America - our is Southern CA division). We can have any breed of dog and get insurance, they just have a disclaimer section that they won't cover injury occurring from certain breeds. Up until last year the list was really long - GSD, huskies, dobermans, LABS! - can you believe that one!, pit bulls, etc.
This year they sent out a new coverage booklet and they took off 7 of the dogs on the list and left only pits bulls, akitas, rottweilers and Canary dogs (which I'm not familiar with). Makes me wonder why they took all those breeds off the list and will now cover injury from them, but not the others. Mmmmm....

OUr BSL states that if you have a "pitbull type" dog you have to have an additional $100,00.00 in insurance I believe it was called ryder. Good thing I don't have any of those. Yikes. I think once you go to the insurance to ask for the additonal insurance that's it they bump you. They asked if we had dogs when we got our current house, about 10 years ago we had a golden so it was ok. I had a jewelry claim recently but my husband left the dogs upstairs in their crates when the adjuster came. I'm sure she heard them barking. She never asked.

I have paid these incredibly high prices for years, both for homeowners and liability insurance for the business, they have now excluded all injuries pertaining to a dog, which leaves me searching again. As a business pertaining to children, we also need to face state regulations with our pets, new regs for those are underway, currently we can not operate a business on a property that houses wolf hybrids, or within so many feet of hybrids, we have heard the list is expanding. I am just so happy knowing that if someone moves next door with a wolf hybrid, my license will be revoked, but if a level II or III child sex offender takes shelter next door, we are ok! I know of several people that have had to re home their dogs because of all the hassles.
Wow, this is absolutely ridiculous.
I live in Michigan and have the only renter's insurance that will cover "dangerous breeds"; I have a Doberman.
