OTCh stands for Obedience Trial Champion. Short of winning the National Obedience Championship (NOC), it is the pinnacle title for an obedience dog in the AKC. I am shooting for that with Frost :-)
Jamie, the directed retrieve involves having three gloves placed along the ring gating. One in the left corner, one in the center, and one in the right corner (placed approximately 3 feet from the gating so readily visible to the dog).
The dog and handler are faced in the opposite direction in the center of the ring and the judge states which glove you will send your dog to retrieve (you actually already know this prior to entering the ring) and gives to the command to send your dog. You then pivot to face the correct glove and use your arm to mark the glove and get the dog to retrieve it. The dog has to go out and return with the glove in the front position before finishing to heel position on command.
An important part about this exercise is the rules note that this is a "directed" retrieve so if the dog is not looking at the glove or if you do not direct the dog with your arm, you can NQ (non-qualify) on the exercise.
