Finn our 12 week old French Brittany gets car sick when riding in the car in his crate. I didn't think this was normal, but I did test out my theory.
Way to pet classes rode in crate in back of car. Got sick, then ate it... on the way home rode in front passenger seat no car sickness. Sat in the seat and watched the world go by.
Now I know some people get sick from reading in cars, sleeping in cars, etc. Can this happen with dogs with them being in the crate??
I was VERY carsick as a child. My doc told my mom to let me sit in the front, or in the middle of the backseat afacing the front, necause your eyes do a wierd tracking thing when you look out the side. So your eyes track objects as you pass then you flick them back forward and track again. Apparently, doing this is one of the causes of car sickness. I also would get sick if there were any wierd smells. Like someone eating, or "new car smell" were both triggers. There are other causes but these was mine.
So, where does his crate face in the car? To the side so that he can see out the side window?
When he does get sick in the car, do you clean it very thoroughly when you get home? I only say this because if he can smell his barf from the last time, maybe it is a trigger for him to barf again?
Long time ago I had a pup that got car sick, but stopped when he was around a year of age. Other than that I haven't had a dog get car sick. I wonder though, is he more 'stressed' in the crate?
Niomi- Nope Finn faces the side. So he can look out the side but since he is in the back he pretty much doesn't see anything moving just the side of the car.
Dave- your poor pooch. I am sorry to hear that
Aimee- I am hoping it quits. He normal rides at the floor of my seat in the car. We have a small Scion xA aka beer can on wheels. Think Chevy Aveo sedan for size. Its tiny, so my stroller of a bus barely fits in the back of the hatchback. Since that area is full Finn rides at my feet very well behaved. But I like if I can have him in the crate to be in there for safety reasons.
I am going to try putting the crate sideways in the backseat. Lets see if this is better. Otherwise he today on the way home sat like a little human in the passenger side chair and watched the cars pass. He liked I have found AC blowing on his face. Would this have anything to do with it. Like the lack of it?
When he sits on the floor at my feet hubby turns on the AC for the floor and it blows on his he almost quivers with joy. lol I have a funny dog.
