I also have used rolled collars (climbing rope ones made by ruff wear)on him and they work great!
I like the idea that this collar is designed to "settle in thick fur" according to the product description. I can do this with my flat collar---pull the fur over it---and it's almost invisible, but I think over time it will wear down or break the fur on the underside of the neck due to rubbing. This is the area where the giant plume of wirey chest fur meets the more delicate fur of the lower part of the mane.
I really like that kind of collars and don't give me much problem like other collars do.
I also used a half-inch nylon martingale and it worked as good as the flat collar and was easier to put on but was a bit more trouble to get off after it settled under the fur.
