I have a Rotti and a VERY BIG 29 1/2 inches at the withers Golden Retriever. Since they were puppies, I have always stuck my hand in their bowls when they were eating, to give or take away ( always giving right back more or the same or better) I can take their favorite bone out of their mouth without so much as a grumble from them, but I always give it back or something better. I am "ALPHA" I giveth and I can taketh away.
Actually, just this morning, I was cleaning my Golden's ears and he laid his prized bone on my lap ( I assumed for me to safe guard from my Rotti, who is the more dominant of the two)And he took it back when I was finished with his ears.
By giving and taking you are teaching your dog that you are a fair and benevolent leader, worthy of their trust and you are avoiding a potential problem of Possession Aggression. This way everything belongs to "Alpha" and if they are going to quibble over a bone or toy, it disappears...no fighting...voila! Just IMO
My husband and I adopted a retired police drug dog (golden) and we learned she has a "resouce aggression" problem.
She bit my husband when he reached for a chew chip that we had been given. It was a punchure wound. I had tried to distract her with a cong because the chew chip was too thick for her and she was having a problem with it. She had ownerhsip of both and wouldn't let any one near her.
I'm afraid of her and don't know how to live with this. We also have two other dogs and this has been difficult for them to adjsut to.
When I spoke with the vet they talked about behavior modificaiton, but I don't really want ot take the time for that and my husband doens't think this is all that serious of a problem. He wants tojust leave her alone and not give her the cew chips, which seem to cause a problem.
Has anyone ever ahd this problem?
