I was sent a communication from the Board of Animal Health in St. Paul, Mn that there have been 6 cases of rabies in domesticated animals in our state in 2010.
The latest was a bull at pasture who was initially treated for hind limb lameness and
hyperthermia. Over the course of a week the disease progressed to rear end paralysis
and sudden death. At the farm there were numerous cats and a dog who were not rabies vaccinated. Two people who helped care for the bull required post exposure
prophylaxis.
The Board of Animal Health is pushing for "livestock and horses to be vaccinated where feasible in addition to dogs and cats". Rabid skunks are felt to be the vector.
Thanks for posting this Betty, I have lots of family from Minnesota because that is where I am originally from.
A friend of mine who lives in Bloomington MN, just informed me that their was a raccoon that animal control was trying to shoot because of suspected Rabies. I don't have anymore details. I think it would be good to know what are the symptoms of rabies?
I think I have heard a few of them. Foaming at the mouth, very aggressive behaviors and change in behaviors.
I guess I have a research project for today.
I posted this because lots of people on this forum have working dogs, therefore I thought they might have cattle too.
Rabies is sure not something you think of first when you have a bull with a sore foot.
You'd be thinking trauma, foot rot, hurt himself trying to breed, lots of other conditions would come to mind before rabies.
