He has been really good with the marker training as far as basic OB. I have tried countlessly to show pack leadership (not give attention when he asks.... even hand feed him his food) and unfortunately my husband is the one who babies him and seems to shoot everything I do out the window
My personal experience is that it is absolutely possible for one person to ruin your training. I had a dog walker for a while, my one major request of this guy was that he never take my dog off leash. I had a whole bunch of reasons for this, but my major one was the obedience training I am working so hard on.
I found out two months ago that he has had my dog off lead at the park all the time, as far back as February. Possibly before that.
Of course I fired him right away.
Within a month of getting rid of him my dog was reliable off lead. She stays close to me and the recall is solid. I had been so frustrated trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. Turns out this goober was the source of the problem.
He was unintentionally preventing me from having fun with my dog! I was in a cycle of constantly backing up my training and never having my dog off lead, including groundwork and never having her off lead out of her crate. I thought she was just headstrong or that I was making a mistake somewhere. It was the inconsistency that killed it.
The poor dog was getting such mixed signals. I was doing all this groundwork, NILF and obedience training and the other guy in her life was just letting her do whatever. It wasn't fair to her at all.
My point is that it only takes ONE person to ruin your training.
Of course you can't fire the husband, but maybe you can have him read this thread to get it through to him how important it is not to undo your work.
I showed him what was posted as of last night and he definately understood what I was saying (it just took more people telling him I guess ) He really is a good guy but, like most people, he thinks his small dog is so cute that he can get away with murder (oddly he is a big dog kind of guy). My husband has promised to work more with the dog as a leader rather than a friend and this weekend Lynne and I plan on beginning a desensitization process on my little creature since my husband will be at work.
