I have a 2 year old King Shepherd that continually "backs up" into my 10 year old Newfounland, and will literally try to sit on her head. I found if I sit on the floor, he will try to do the same to me. Is this a show of dominance and how do I stop it? I think my Newf is the dominant dog, but puts up with this behavior from the young King.
This is my first attempt on this web-site and hope I am doing this right. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Hard to say what the motivation is but when I don't like a behavior I approach it from two angles.
1. Prevent it from happening
2. Teach a non-compatible behavior
In this case I would have the King Shepherd leashed and not allow the backing up which leads to the head sitting and I would train him to go to his place (bed, crate, mat whatever)
Thanks Lenka. I haven't read the e-book yet, but I will right now.
Thanks for your help too, Sheila. Yukon is great in every other aspect--I just can't explain this behavior. We did marker training for the first year of his life, but I have to admit that I have just gotten away from it. But I will definitely
go back to that and do just what you suggested. He ONLY does
it when he's excited (when we just get in from work or company comes over). Other then that, I don't see him do it. But I will
distract him off of her immediately (clicker was a great idea!!).
Thanks to both of you again!
Regards, Robin
P.S. Sheila, is that your GSD? How did you get his picture up like that??--it's great!

Yes that is my GSD. And as far as getting his picture up sometimes living with 3 teenagers is not so bad. Technologically I am challenged but others will help.
Hey Robin, I kinda doubt theres anything dominance related going on or that your Newfoundland is dominant at all. It sounds like a little bit of the young dog being unsure at times and looking for that contact for a little security. I bet if you don't make too big a deal of it and just gently stop him, it'll go away.
