Because many children are falling below average in their reading skills, many schools are looking into
Literacy assistance dogs. I know my preschool age are more eager to prove their literacy skills while reading or writing to my dogs!
Drift will be a sought after therapy dog, not that she already isn't! It does take a special dog for this!
Well, I'm not sure Drift and I are ready for a "real" blog yet. I think I will keep "Drift Therapy" here on Leerburg, since this is where it all started
Drift very much enjoys her job. On the rare occasion she can't come with me in the morning, she gives me the huge eyes and crestfallen look... as she tries to sneak into the car. The only time I can't take her with is when I have to do an off site meeting at a place that doesn't allow dogs (DHS offices mostly).
On Friday, the kids asked what Drift likes to do when she's not working. We got out a basketball and I let her go with it. The kids laughed at her trying to pick up the ball and shooting it between her back legs. They finally got to see Drift actually be a "dog"
Drift will be going for her TDI certification in a couple of weeks. We have been taking a class to brush up on her skills around medical equipment and stuff. They brought in a few kids with hoola hoops and some of the dogs kind of freaked out. Drift took one look, yawned and lay down. I guess if 6 - 6 year olds banging a drum in the next room doesn't faze her, a couple of hoola hoops won't do it either
The instructor for our class is impressed by Drift and her relaxed nature. Drift is the youngest dog in the class, and I have to say, the best mannered. (For those that don't know, Drift is only 2 1/2 years old.)
I am glad that Drift was able to meet children at another site. I think the more I am able to get Drift out there and show what she can do, more sites will look into getting a therapy dog of their own. Drift has done wonders with our clients, and I feel bad for the kids that don't have the benefit of being with her each day.
Drift Therapy seems to be working, and I will definately keep you all updated on how she's doing.
A fan club?? I think our clients would be all over that!!! The younger kids love to write her letters and draw her pictures. My office door is plastered with pictures they drew of her... one of the kids is really self critical and was afraid the bigger kids would make fun of his picture, so that one is on the inside of her crate where only Drift can see it.
Drift doesn't judge. Drift doesn't criticize. Drift loves unconditionally. Drift is strong when one needs to lean on her. Drift is brave when one is afraid. Drift's fur soaks up tears and leaves smiles. Drift gives hope when it has been forgotten. Drift gives all she has, and asks for nothing in return. Drift is a dog.....
One of the kids asked why Drift likes to come to work and be with them. Another piped up "Cuz that's how she rolls." Yup, that's Drift, and that's how she rolls
Kelly,
your reply made me smile.
I love the description of Drift. Beautiful.
I also love the idea that she has a hand drawn gift in her crate. That is so cool.
I love those kids y'all work with.
Wow Kelly...special, special girl and the attitude with which you present her makes your team unstoppable in the incredible work you guys do and how you affect the lives of others.
