I am new to the forum. I have a German Shorthaired Pointer, who is 11 months old (Tobias), and I would like to know the proper way to walk him with a stroller. Right now I have him on his lead, which is across the handle bars of the stroller. It is not tied on or anything and he walks along quite well. There is only issues with birds, being that he is a sporting dog. He gets distracted by them and pulls in that direction. Right now he has the plastic prong collar, but Tobias has such a high pain tolerance that I need to buy the metal one.
Anyway, so does anyone know the proper way to walk with a stroller.
Tether the leash to your waist. This will solve the "Oh, my god he tipped the stroller issue".
When my son was young, the dogs had to walk behind ME, not beside the stroller. This stopped me running over them, or them cutting the stroller off.
It takes practice and I used marker training and an empty stroller to start. Get a six or eight foot leash, make a loop with the handle to your waist, and then tie it so it doesn't fall down, then clip the dog onto you.
Hi Elissa, Welcome to the forum! GSPs are great looking dogs! What types of training have you been using with Tobias and how much exercise (besides walking with you and the baby) does he get on a daily basis?
We'd love to see a pic when you get a chance... but with a baby you may not have a lot of time to play on the computer!
Thanks guys for the advice. I never thought of umbilical training him when walking the stroller.
Tobias gets a fair amount of exercise. He has two half hour walks a day with an hour long run in the yard. We have a 1/4 of an acre property we live on. He just rips around the yard. He is being marker trained. That is going ok. He still has some problems when people come to the door. He gets super excited. I make him work for his meals with using the buster cube.
All in all he seems to be progressing quiet nicely.
I have tried to upload a pic we shall see if it works.
