One of my GSD's has no intrest in almost any food he takes to cheese but it's not high enough in value to him to work for it. However a ball or a tug he will do anything to get. Not a big deal right..well here's my problem. He only wants to work after dark during the day he has no intrest in anything and most of my time with him playing/training is after midnight. this wouldnt be a problem but my days start at around 5 am so the lack of sleep is catching up. any idea's how to get him more motivated to play during the day?
If you lived in one of the hot zones, no dog really plays well in the heat. in my area, it is still hot around seven PM, so if that is the case take it in consideration. Dan

I live in florida so ya the heat does have an effect on his drive. i figured this was the case to start, however even in the house he just does not want to play during the day time.
I dont keep him in a crate but he goes in his kennel for about 3 hours during the day i dont like to keep them outside to long as it is so hot. so i rotate who is in and who is out. then he goes in the kennel about 9pm when it's cooled off and i take him out for training around 12 when he's ready to work.
originally it was at 9 am and 9 pm but with him i have been feeding at diffrent times or not feeding for a day to try and find a food he would work for. he is a very picky eater as well i prefer to feed my dogs a BARF diet but he just doesnt care for it and will only eat the kibble , i managed to get him to eat some chicken hearts and gizards if i mix it in the kibble with some eggs
however even in the house he just does not want to play during the day time.
Chris,
My dog is hesitant to play in the house too. I think it is because I worked hard on instilling good house manners and rewarded all his quiet, relaxed moments and he got nothing for unruly behavior that he feels quiet in the house is more rewarding than play. I could be wrong but my dog is always ready to go at a moments notice except in the house....not that I can't get him going but it takes effort.
Have you tried working with him at 5AM when you first get up while it would still be relatively cool outside? The after midnight isn't a pattern I would want to develop since you have such an early start time to your day.
