Hi!
I read almost all topics here and have to ask something.
I have rott female 12 months old. She's trained dog ( I work with her and plan to work all her life), not dominant to her pack members (my husbant and me) and all in all a great dog. But(there's always one but) one thing I still can't solve:
when she meets another female dog that is smaller then herself or puppy (male or female) she starts to growl. If I correct her she stops. She does not bite. I have been correcting her for about 4 months every single time she did this. And she does it all over again! The correction seems to be working fine for that specific time but another day she will try again. Is here anyone who has problem like this. Not dominant dog at home, trained, good with male dogs (if they are not very small) and with some bitches (that are larger than she is). But when little female shows up she starts to growl. Any suggestions?
Don't let her around other females. Period. By correcting her growling it is quite likely that all you will do is supress the warning and she will learn to just bite instead.. then we will hear "she just attacked out of nowhere."
Dogs aren't social to outsiders. They are pack animals. While some dogs seem to not care about playing with other dogs, other dogs see it as a very stressful thing. Accept that your dog is uncomfortable with other females and keep her seperate.
I read an article awhile back written by Lou Castle called "Crittering". It was very enlightening and should fix your problem. An e-collar was used during this problem solving though. If you plan on working this dog for a long time and this is a constant problem, you might want to try this "Crittering" thing.
