Yesterday, one of our younger clients didn't want to participate in music therapy. He was getting a little over stimulated and took a break and crawled into one of the "cubbies" next to the wall in the hallway. He would not join the group no matter what anyone said. It was obvious he was digging in his heels, so Drift and I intervened a little.
The music therapist put on a CD. I think the song was Cottoneye Joe (or something like that). Pretty upbeat and rockin'. Drift and I went out to the common room which was visible from his chosen cubby. We proceeded to dance. Drift jumped up on me and we danced, she "sang" with me (she rarely barks so that got everyone's attention), then she did a few spins and finished off with a between the legs bow. We had him hooked by the first spin He came running out shouting that he wanted to dance with Drift and started dancing. He did a few spins along with her and they sang a few bars together. He was fine the rest of the day, and told everyone that he got to dance with Drift. He was still talking about it today.
Really, there are some things I wish we could video He was struggling that day, but a little dancing with Drift cheered him right up
I talk alot about all the great things that Drift does for our clients. I want to take a moment and tell you a little about our kids, and how great they are as well.
Our kids range in age from 6-17. Most are mentally troubled with a diagnosis anywhere from Depression and PTSD to Conduct disorder. The kids are not allowed to attend school at this time because they are either disruptive or have been expelled due to illegal activity. Many of them have a less than ideal home life, and just plain don't trust people.
Today was my birthday, and my kids suprised me. They made me cheesecake (they know I hate chocolate), they signed a card for me with personal messages, and the olders promised to paint my office for me. One of my 17 year old girls was being discharged today, and sang me a song because she can't be there to help paint.
So, each time I hear a parent tell me that their kid is no good or is a pain in the ass, I will show them that card, with the wonderful and personal messages in it. I will tell them that everyone is a pain in the ass at times, but these kids have ginormous hearts, and that should never be overlooked.
