With a puppy there is also the crap shoot of bad hips. With the adult dog this "should" be a given that the hips are good.
Personally I wouldn't miss out on the training.
I'd rather see the lights go on in a puppy then compete with an already titled dog.

To me getting an already trained dog is a better idea if you just like competing and simple maintenance training. If you're more concerned with the titles and the points.
I want a puppy because it's the training I enjoy. The competitions and titles are just a bonus to the training. But it's the actual teaching and learning myself that I live for.
...Puppy: you could socialize the puppy to your environment, form the habits and manners and begin conditioning the dog to the training equipment... you could start the dog early in tracking. The dog bonds to you and nobody else. It's the least expensive way. And it's the most cool one.
Young dog: you can be sure that the dog has the right drives and that hips and elbows are good. You still do most of the training.
Titled dog: instant gratification, you can learn how to handle a SchH dog, you know everything before you buy and avoid all the frustration of raising a puppy... - from "Advanced Schutzhund".
Training a pup is the fun part, but what I have done in the past (although, not Sch, but herding) and have recently done for my daughter is get an already trained dog with a great attitude. That way, s/he could teach me what to do. My daughter thought she wanted a puppy. The breeder was wise enough to know better and gave (co-own) her an older, already trained stock dog to learn with. It is working nicely for us.
BTW, Edmond - just what is that adorable little bitty brindled dog in you sig? Absolutly adorable!!
