Hi, I just wanted to thank everyone who gave me a lot of good advice a few weeks back before I let a trainer take my dog for a few weeks of protection training. I recently went up to be involved in the training and my dog is doing amazing!! This dog had a rough start in protection training due to the first trainer. Once we found this new trainer, we can see the difference almost immediately. The dog loves this trainer and responds very well to the training. They are also working him detection and we found out that he loves it!! He is coming home this Saturday. The only thing I was concerned about was my dogs weight. He lost a lot of weight while he was at the training kennel. The trainer said he ate OK, but he seemed a little stressed at first when we left him. But now he is okay, his weight is just down. Is this okay? Normal for a dog who is left to work at a kennel? I plan on bulking him back to his normal weight once he comes home.
I can't speak for a training kennel but I will say that for a boarding kennel often a dog will not eat as they did at home. Often (and I am not saying your dog is one such) the dog that loses weight needed to lose weight. But I can certainly see a dog eating less or skipping meals compared to home. Part is stress and eating less and part is being more active. At my boarding kennel the dogs that would be home alone and sleeping all day are at the kennel running and barking much of their day. So activity alone may take some weight off.
