To elaborate on what Joyce said, the important thing about raw meaty bones is that the bones are wholly consumable.
An example of RMBs would be chicken backs, chicken necks, turkey necks (for bigger dogs) etc. If you can find them, chicken backs are a very cheap way to get the RMBs in the diet.
To the RMBs we add muscle meat. Here it could be anything from hamburger to steaks!
The goal is to approximate the meat to bone ratio that a typical, small prey item would have and would be wholly consumed. A good way to look at it is to take a whole chicken and de-bone it in the typical manner one would for human consumption. You would be left with RMB (raw meaty bones) and muscle meat. One could either utilize that meat in the diet, or substitute it for other types of meat, so say the same amount of ground beef.
Adding cheap RMBs to your current diet would allow you to use less of the more expensive THK and still keep the diet balanced. You could even go cheaper if you want to, but it will require a little (very little) more work to get you there. As an example, I feed two Rotts a fully raw diet (including occasional use of THK) for around $35 a week.
There is a bit more to it than that, but that is the gist of it.

This web site is a wonderful resource for someone looking for practical how-to information about raw feeding. Most of what I learned about raw feeding in the beginning I learned from this woman. The rest you learn by doing, and watching your own dogs.
There's also a lot of raw feeding info at this very site. Just look through the old threads here in the All-Natural Diet section.

Find a restraunt/wholesale supplier & buy in bulk. I just paid $89 for 200 lbs of RMBs (3 cases- 1 40lb case each of all fresh Chicken necks, backs & leg Qtrs) & 60 lbs of gr turkey (10 lb rolls). I also get gr. beef in 5 or 10 lb rolls & cases pork necks etc when needed there also. I have been buying in bulk for the last 4+ years. 200lbs last me 3 months with 2 adult GSDs. Obviously, you need to have the freezer space to store large quantities when buying in bulk.
With adding in suppliments & organ meats, it only costs me about $1- $1.50 a day to feed 2 dogs depeending on what I feed that day. The higher end if I feed lamb or buffalo as variety for that day etc. I used to add a little bit of THK Embark a bit in the am feeding, but haven't done that in a long while. Just didn't use enough of it to keep it around without spoiling. That used to boost the cost up.

Know any deer hunters? The season is upon us and now is the time to start asking for scraps. Hunters sometimes don't use deer necks and rib cages.
Also, find out where the hunters go to get their deer processed if they don't butcher it themselves. The best thing that ever happened to me with regards to feeding my dogs raw was to make friends with a large game butcher. This butcher saves ALL the scraps for me. My dogs now eat for nearly free for several months of the year. I say "nearly free" because I still do add salmon oil, vitamin E, green tripe, blueberries and a variety of other things in small quantities along with the deer meat and bones.
I can get about 5-6 boxes of scraps per day during bow season and more during shotgun season. Each box contains the scraps from one deer and provides several pounds of meat and RMBs. I have to sort through the scraps to find what I can feed the dogs, but it is totally worth it. I bag and freeze all the good stuff, fill my freezer, and my dogs end up eating venison long into the spring. I feed my dogs all the meat scraps, some of the fat, tongues, and smaller rib sections for RMBs.
And, if I'm really lucky, I'll also get the occasional box of moose scraps.

I buy my meat for my dog in bulk at Restaurant Depot. There you can get chicken for $0.5 per pound. I also always ask them for the beef they cannot sell for human consumption, because it was somehow damaged. That meat is still good for my dog, and I get it at a 30% discount. The problem is that you buy in bulk, so I have a freezer in the garage just for the dog. I usually buy 50 pounds of meat at a time.

Thanks for the idea Laurent! I just checked and we have a Restaurant Depot that is fairly close to us. I have one source for a raw supplier, but I am very interested in other meat sources and hope I can find some different meats here.
Can you really get chicken for $0.5 per pound?
I am there!!

Laurent, terrific idea buying at Restaurant Depot. I checked and there is one near us - but the web site says you must be a member, which requires a business license or tax exemption certificate. How do you purchase from them without a membership? I am feeding 5 gsd's and this sounds like it could cut my food bill considerably.
