I need some advice. I have been the owner of a 6 year old male boxer for the past 3 years and we have never had any problems. Today he pushed his way under our chain link fence and killed our neighbor's cat. Our neighbor is concerned he is too aggressive and wants us to get rid of him. We live in the country on a 1-acre tract with several homes around us. Should I be concerned over this one event?
Yes, you should be concerned. This is predatorial aggression, and it can mean your dog's life, should he ever kill livestock. You should keep this dog under your close supervision at all times, and when you cannot supervise, keep him in a secure kennel. Work on obedience. This dog needs to be SOLID on the recall, should he ever chase another animal, you need to be able to call him off. This means you need to put in a lot of time with him on basic obedience.
Now that he knows he can get out of your yard and now that he has reaped the rewards of killing a cat, he's likely to attempt it again.
I love my cats very much, and would be very upset if my neighbor's dog killed one of them! I'd probably take legal action.
