Hypothetical question: If a person wanted to get a rescue/shelter dog and was interested in Sch. training, what traits would the person look for in the dog?

Well, hypothetically, I wouldn't get a shelter dog for SchH if I was truly interested in the training it entails. But, I guess if it's a possibility, you could find a training director or other club member to go with you to see the dogs available. I would look for a lot of drive, a lot of energy, and a solid mind. Not afraid of loud noises, sudden movements, etc.

No problem. I know you can find a lot of drivey dogs in rescues moreso than shelters. If you're really serious about it, I would go to a Malinois or GSD rescue and foster one of the dogs you think has potential. Not only can you help this dog find a forever home (and possibly with you), you'll help the rescue bring in more dogs who need homes. It's a win-win!
I'm way late on this conversation- but I'm one of those lucky people that got a 1 yr old dog from a rescue.... my trainer says he'll easily coast to SchH 3.
Drive, and solid nerves, would be the most important factors I'd think. But I'd go with Katie's advice and bring someone along that has far more experience then me. I just happened to get lucky. Wasn't looking for a sport dog- discovered I had one within about 24 hours of having him at home. The dang thing does not have an 'off' button!

There you go, a success story!!
Though I would have to think that it has to do with him being a DS. I think the chances would be better with a DS than a GSD or even a Malinois due to the showlines that exist.
Good point Katie. That's very possible. I also got lucky, and he had not had a whole lot of interaction prior to me. (Tied in a backyard) Aka.... no training/corrections to squash drive, or basic training to undo. He's seriously my dream-pup. Cept not a pup... lol.
