now make sure you REGISTER it! I can't begin to tell you about all the dogs we'd get in at the rescue, who were chipped. Yay! Call the registry...no current phone number. Chipa are not worth a darn if people ca't keep them up to date, or never submit the paperwork in the first place.
good call. I can't believe you can't register online... you have to mail in a form and pay $20.
I think you might be able to do it over the phone. At least, I was able to do it that way with my last dog. After that I had online access to update and change info.
You can also cross-register. I will look up how I did it, but I think I was able to register for free with the AKC registry, as well as whatever chip manufacturer it was. (even though my dog is a mix)

This is why I use AKC CAR database. You can easily cross register. No annual fee, no cost for updates, you can update ONLINE, I get a reduced rate for registering with akc registration, and they have breeder discounts for free chips.
Really I think the only major downfall of this registry is that they don't have 1 pack and 5 pack chip sets like Avid and home again.
