" I'm thinking that I may still have to go to the Derm Vet.
It 's just that so many people claim that they have gone to them and it hasn't helped their situation. So I've been leary of doing that. What do you think about this?"
This is so vague. Who? Did they go expecting a one-visit cure? Did they follow up with instructions and suggested testing?
I am very cynical about many owners. We live in a culture that practices emergency-room medicine for chronic conditions, and that filters down quite readily to the dog-owner population.
I would add to that, how's it going with the GP vet? Form here, the answer is: not good.
At the VERY least, I'd be making calls and finding a vet with some derm/allergy experience. I would want that scraping done.
I'd be bathing (or thoroughly rinsing) this guy frequently (with careful patting dry in all creases and between toes).
Did you start a log and up the fish oil?

PS
Chewing on the tail: Have you brushed/combed him over a white sheet for flea evidence?
About the anal area: "I've been putting Destin on it and Aloe."
As I recall, Desitin is a diaper rash ointment that's mainly zinc oxide and cod liver oil? I don't know if I'd feel safe with reapplying zinc oxide over and over to be licked off. I'd probably open Vitamin E caps and smooth the contents on.

My girl has awful allergies, fleas being her number one by far.
I fought a loosing battle against them all summer even though we have wood floors and treat all animals monthly with frontline/advantage. All the fleas we were finding were very small, and there weren't many of them at all, but they were still enough to set off the reaction.
She was nearly bald from the ribs back and my guilt level was through the roof.
Finally I switched to comfortis and it was better within days, and she was fully furred within a month. With very little scratching since.
The other most effective tool I used was a homemade flea trap using a small candle lit inside a shallow dish of soapy water. This is amazingly effective and so simple.
I would consider using paper towels dampened with all natural witch hazel, or even tuck's pads on her bottom then maybe following with some gold bond or other powder.
(my girl does not lick the powder)

Connie,
Well its been about 2 weeks since my post on the allergy thread.
My Boy is doing good on the raw diet but still having a few issues
As long as I use the Vit e on his rear it seems fine. But I stopped for a few days and he was going after it this am. Shd I have him check for yeast overgrowth?
Also he has a rash again on his one side of his privates. ( 1 1/2 weeks ) The first week I tried the home rememdies I found on line such as vinagar and goldenseal twice a day. Didn't help.
So I resorted to the Spray and powder from the vet hoping that I won't need to go to antibiotics. So my question is that something is still a problem for him. Do you have faith in Derm Vets? I guess that's the only thing left to do. He is also on Allergy clear from Leerburg. Thanks for your time.

Connie,
I just took the time to read an other post where you are stating that a Derm Vet probably is a good thing. You also say to look into doing a scraping. (So he is on a Max amount of fish oil from Leerburg). I will see if I can find a vet with Allergy experience and if that does not work I will give the Derm Vet a chance. Thanks for all your help on this.

Connie,
UPdate.......My boy has been on raw for about 6 mos now. Everything has improved. He has the most beautiful coat now. Looks like a show dog. He still has a little trouble with his rear, but he does have to have his glands expressed 1 or 2 a month.
I am mostly following Ed's diet for an 80 lb dog on the Leerburg site, but add some extra as he is 90 lbs.
I feed him mainly 1 lb Chicken theighs on the bone once a day and 1 lb beef once a day,
1/4 cup veggies, vit e, and pumpkin once a day
salmon oil 2 x day
some supplements for allergies
So like I said he has been doing so well on this, but just
this week he started having pudding for his bowl movements.
I'm giving him a homopathic product for the mush which seems to help but I would like to find out why he is having this problem.
Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks

How often pudding? Every poop? When last week? How many days now?
What dietary change had been made? Organ meat or more fat or increased meal size? Had you increased beef?
Please post back with details. No matter what caused it, you will want to start a fast if it has continued for days now. We can help with that.
But also, is he lethargic or normal? Good appetite? No blood in poop? Any urgency, like diarrhea accidents?

Connie,
It started about 5 days ago. I gave him the homopathic treatment a few times and pumpkin and some rice the next day and then he was solid for a few times. Then yesterday he was half normal and half mush, last nite and this am mush.
No dietary changes in 6 mo.
Chicken 7 times a week with bone.
Meal sizes always the same.
Organ meat 2 times a week
Ground beef or ground turkey cooked 5 times a week. (or raw beef roast)
Great appetite. No blood. It's been letting us know when he has to get outside. Waking us a nite or early am.
He is not lethargic, very normal.
Thinking back a little though, he had this problem a little last summer. (but he was on kibble at the time so I blamed the kibble.)
Anyway it has warmed up a lot here in Florida and I wonder if he is getting overheaded on his walks. My husband goes in the am for about 1/2 to 1 hour.
A lot of times he will not want to walk when it is warmer in the afternoons. I wonder if this could have something to do with it. Thanks

I would do a one-day fast (but no water fast, of course!) and then reintroduce food in very small more frequent meals, making the first few meals overcooked rice with a little pumpkin, and watching the poop from the last one before giving the next one (just for a few days). No matter what triggered it, the gut is inflamed now from diarrhea, so job one is soothing it.
Then I would phase back in the real diet gradually, small meals, again doing the poop-monitoring before adding the next step.

Sounds like a great idea. Thanks What do you think of my idea that maybe he is getting overheated on his walks. I'm having my husband cut them down to about 20 min. at a time. The problems is he loves to walk and run, but I thought I give it a try.
