This is my first male dog, and he is intact still. He is almost 14 months. Am I being too worried over him scenting a female? We have a fenced in yard, but trainer told me nothing much will keep him in if he smells a female in heat. SO I worry over him being out of my site for even a couple minutes. He has never showed an interest in trying the fence. I also allow him short close periods of off leash with us when we are hiking. We are far from a road, and own the land. 5 minutes or so at a time, with very high value treats in my pocket. Am I being too worrisome, or not enough? I don't know much about males, especially intact. And I don't want to go on false info.
And an indelicate question... Do their privates ever stop dripping the little spots on the floor? Sorry, but I have been wondering that from the first day it happened.
Hi Julie:
I have owned (and currently own) several intact male dogs. Based on my experience, it is not something to live in fear of - your dog will most likely not run off at the first, distant whiff of a female in heat. I also own intact females and while the males are definitely interested when they come into heat, they are controlled through barriers when I'm not watching and obedience when I am watching. Some males are more affected by a female in heat than others, and that doesn't necessarily relate to whether or not they've mated before.
Overall, it's really a matter of keeping a male secured when you can't watch him, and having the ability to verbally control him when you can watch him, which is really no different than what you'd do for any dog's general safety regardless of gender or "intact" status.
