Hello everyone
I am thinking of getting a gsd puppy next year and will be training her with the leerburg 8 weeks to 8 months dvd.
My question is can she stay in the pen till she is full grown or should it be changed to a crate as the dog gets older.
Or does it just depend on how the dog is as an adult.
Regardless of your decision, a crate is always handy to have. Never know when you'll need it.
I've always crated no matter the age of the dog. I think its just the safest place for my dog when I'm not home.

Are we talking about an X-pen vs a crate?
I'd reverse the thinking and start the puppy in a crate--with the thought that it might graduate to an X-pen when it is older and housebroken. (Although I've never seen the need for an X-pen, personally.)
The relatively confined space in a crate is the whole reason behind it. A puppy in an X-pen will poop in one corner and still have plenty of space to sleep. Puppies don't need all that room. They'll have plenty of time out of the crate with you, on a leash, doing everything you do. They're only in the crate when you aren't there, or cannot supervise them with your full attention.
I have more crates than a normal person should...and one x-pen.
The crates are absolutely a necessity when raising a puppy.
I use the x-pen for my adults sometimes, usually when we are traveling because it is easier to haul around and set up. It is great when I don't want them on leash and I don't want them running around either.
Here are a few pics of my girls in their pen (as you can see, they don't mind it too much):
Thanks for the advice and the photos of the dogs in the pen,i understand the way of thinking it should be the other way around crate first then more freedom in a pen when shes house trained.
